Former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher took a shot at singer-songwriter Harry Styles, saying the former member of One Direction has “nothing to do with music.”
Gallagher’s comments come days after Styles’ new hit single “As It Was” became Spotify’s most-streamed song in a single day so far this year, and the most-streamed song in the United States in a single day.
In an interview with Daily Star, Gallagher claimed Styles isn’t a “real” artist.
“You’re not telling me Harry Styles is currently in a room somewhere writing a song,” Gallagher said. “With any joy, he’ll be surrounded by a lot of girls. I can assure you he’s not got an acoustic guitar out trying to write a middle eight for something.”
Contrary to Gallagher’s belief, Styles is credited as a songwriter on each of his tracks, alongside several One Direction songs and records for other artists, according to Daily Star.
In an interview with Zoe Ball on her UK Radio 2 Breakfast show, Styles said he was excited because he wrote “As It Was” some time ago.
“I’m really proud of it and obviously all of us went through something during the pandemic. I think for me personally, I’d really been forced to pause and it gave me a chance to work out who I was away from music, as a friend, a son, a brother, all of those things,” Styles said.
Gallagher took more hits at Styles for becoming known on the TV talent show The X Factor, on which Styles’ band One Direction was formed in 2010. Gallagher insinuated that Styles, and any other person from the show, don’t work as hard as “real” musicians.
“The X Factor is a TV show, it’s got nothing to do with music, it’s got nothing to do with music whatsoever,” he said. “And anything that has come from that, that’s got nothing to do with music.”
This isn’t the first time Gallagher has set out to mock Styles. In 2017, the “She’s Electric” singer-songwriter bashed Styles’ hit single “Sign of the Times” in an interview with Absolute Radio.
“People of my age have let themselves go, they’re fat, balding idiots with fading tattoos,” he said. “They sit in their garage and write s**t like ‘Sign of the Times’ for Harry Styles. Which, quite frankly, my cat could have written in about 10 minutes!”
Although Styles hasn’t responded to Gallagher’s comments, his fans came to his defense on social media.
“It takes a petty, insecure man to attack someone following their dream, living their best life, creating music and joy,” one fan tweeted. “Careful, your true colors are showing-your mean spirited says more about you than anyone else.”
Another fan claimed most people hadn’t heard of Gallagher until he started criticizing Styles.
“I don’t know if i’d call Noel Gallagher “music” considering the fact that the majority of the population had never even heard of him until he mentioned harry styles,” another Twitter user wrote.
Newsweek attempted to reach Styles for comment.
